Autonomous Rover Technology for Mars Sample Return

Planetary rovers enable good sample selection and retrieval for Mars sample return missions. After landing, the rovers search for the best possible scientific samples in the region around a lander, and they return these selected samples to an ascent vehicle that launches the samples into Mars orbit. To streamline the search for, the acquisition, and the retrieval of samples, rover autonomy is a...

Vision-based Terrain Classification and Classifier Fusion for Planetary Exploration Rovers

Autonomous rover operation plays a key role in planetary exploration missions. Rover systems require more and more autonomous capabilities to improve efficiency and robustness. Rover mobility is one of the critical components that can directly affect mission success. Knowledge of the physical properties of the terrain surrounding a planetary exploration rover can be used to allow a rover system...

Terrain Classification for Autonomous Robot Mobility from Safety, Security, Rescue Robotics to Planetary Exploration

Mobile robots are increasingly used in unstructured domains without permanent supervision by a human operator. One example is Safety, Security and Rescue Robotics (SSRR) where human operators are a scarce resource. There are additional motivations in this domain to increase robot autonomy, e.g., the desire to decrease the cognitive load on the operator or to allow robot operations when communic...

Autonomous science for an ExoMars Rover-like mission

In common with other Mars exploration missions, human supervision of Europe's ExoMars Rover will be mostly indirect via orbital relay spacecraft and thus far from immediate. The gap between issuing commands and witnessing the results of the consequent rover actions will typically be on the order of several hours or even sols. In addition, it will not be possible to observe the external environm...
